Tommy John surgery ends Gustave's season

Astros reliever Jandel Gustave underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday morning in Houston, and is expected to be out until 2018.

Gustave suffers setback, headed for arm exam

Right-handed reliever Jandel Gustave, who's been on the disabled list since April 19 with right forearm tightness, was sent back to Houston on Friday to be examined by team doctors after a live bullpen session Thursday at Triple-A Fresno saw him suffering recurring arm soreness.

Signed by the Astros as a 17-year-old nondrafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic on May 25, 2010...signed by Felix Francisco and Rafael Belen... Had an eventful 2014-15 offseason...was selected by Boston with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 Rule 5 Draft, before being subsequently traded to Kansas City on Dec. 11, 2014...spent Spring Training with the Royals Major League club and was claimed off waivers by San Diego on March 26, 2015...returned to Houston from the Padres on April 3, 2015... Was added to the Astros 40-man roster on Nov. 20, 2015.

2016

Made his Major League debut and appeared in 14 total games in the Majors over the final two months of the season...was scoreless in 10 of his 14 outings and had six multi-strikeout appearances...walked four and struck out 16 in his 15.1 innings pitched...recalled to Houston on Aug. 10 for his first career Major League stint... optioned to Triple A Fresno on Aug. 14...was recalled from Triple A again on Sept. 2...made his Major League debut in Game 1 of the Astros doubleheader on Aug. 11 at MIN...allowed one run on three hits in 1.0 inning of work...earned his first career win on Sept. 27 vs. SEA after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings...pitched in 47 games at Triple A Fresno, going 3-3 with three saves, a 3.79 ERA (24ER/57IP), 23 walks and 55 strikeouts.
