CHICAGO -- The Astros recalled right-handed pitched Jake Buchanan on Friday to fill their 25-man roster after optioning David Martinez to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.
Manager Bo Porter said before Friday's game that he hopes Buchanan can fill the void of a long reliever in the bullpen after the Astros designated Jerome Williams for assignment.
"Jake's throwing the ball well down in Triple-A," Porter said. "We want to give him an opportunity to see if he can fill that role."
Buchanan was credited a loss to the Rays in his big league debut on June 21, allowing ive runs and eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. He earned his first win in his only other appearance -- a hitless 11th inning against the Tigers six days later.
