Bourn swipes 50th base of the season

HOUSTON -- Astros center fielder Michael Bourn swiped his 50th base of the season in the first inning of Saturday's 5-4 win over the Phillies, becoming the first Houston player to reach 50 steals in a season since Craig Biggio in 1998.

Bourn singled to lead off the first, and he stole second base against Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton, who has allowed only three stolen bases in his past 13 starts. Bourn entered Saturday leading the National League in steals, triples, infield hits and bunt hits and was the hardest to get to hit into a double play. He also was second in batting average with runners in scoring position.

Bourn, who stole 41 bases in his first year with the Astros in 2008, is 15 shy of the club record of 65, set by Gerald Young in 1988. Only Young, Eric Yelding (64 in 1990) and Cesar Cedeno (61 in '77) have stole as many as 60 bases in a season for the Astros, and Cedeno is the club's career leader at 487.
