Astros claim Jackson off waiver from St. Louis

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros made several roster moves today, including the waiver claim of infielder Ryan Jackson from St. Louis. Additionally, infielder Jake Elmore has been claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox, right-handed pitcher John Ely has been released and outfielder J.D. Martinez has been outrighted to Triple A Oklahoma City. The announcements were made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow.

Jackson, 25, played in seven Major League games across two stints with the Cardinals this season. He spent most of the 2013 season with Triple A Memphis, where he hit .278 (123x442) with 19 doubles, 34 RBI and a .352 on-base percentage. He played primarily shortstop (72g), but also saw time at third base (32g), second base (10g) and in the outfield (7g). Jackson was originally a fifth-round pick by the Cardinals out of the University of Miami in the June 2009 draft.

Elmore, 26, hit .242 (29x120) with four doubles, two home runs and six RBI in 52 games across two stints with the Astros in 2013. An infielder by trade, Elmore made Astros history this season, becoming the first player in franchise history to play all nine positions in a single season. He was originally acquired by Houston off waivers from Arizona on Nov. 1, 2012.

Ely, 27, made only one appearance in 2013, a 4.0-inning start for Triple A OKC, before undergoing Tommy John Surgery on April 24. He was originally acquired by Houston from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen on Dec. 19, 2012.

Martinez, 26, hit .250 (74x296) with 17 doubles, seven home runs and 36 RBI in 86 games for the Astros this season. He has appeared in 252 games for Houston over the last three seasons (2011-13) and remains with the organization that drafted him in the 20th round of the June 2009 draft.

With the addition of Jackson and the removals of Elmore, Ely and Martinez, the Astros 40-man roster is now at 34 players. The Astros will announce any potential roster additions tomorrow morning.
