Boone, the former big leaguer who had open-heart surgery less than five months ago, started at third base in a Double-A home game for the Corpus Christi Hooks against Midland, swinging at the first pitch and fouling out to the first baseman in his first at-bat.
Boone, who batted second, finished 0-for-2 before being removed for Jhon Florentino after five innings. The Hooks are an affiliate of the Houston Astros.
Boone, who is most known for his 11th-inning, pennant-winning home run in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series for the New York Yankees over the Boston Red Sox in 2003, had surgery in late March to repair a congenital defect in his aortic valve.
He signed with the Astros in the offseason in an attempt to play a 12th season in the big leagues. Boone, the son of former Major League catcher Bob Boone and brother of former second baseman Bret, has previously played for Cincinnati, the Yankees, Cleveland, Florida and Washington.
