HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros and the Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz announced today that the Astros will host the Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz from the Mexican Baseball League for two exhibition games in 2014.
The exhibition games will take place at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, March 29 at 7:10 p.m. CT and on Sunday, March 30 at 1:10 p.m. CT. This will mark the first time that Veracruz has played a Major League team in a Major League stadium, and the first time that the Astros have hosted a club from the Mexican League.
Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow, who was born and spent 15 years in Mexico City, represented the Astros at the press conference along with Astros Spanish radio broadcasters Alex Trevino and Francisco Romero.
The representatives from the Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz of the Mexican Baseball League included Chairman Jose Antonio Mansur, Vice President Jose Antonio Mansur, Jr., Executive Chairman Jean Paul Mansur and Administrative Chair Chara Mansur. Dr. Luis Malpica, Consul General of Mexico in Houston, was also in attendance.
The Governor of Veracruz, Dr. Javier Duarte de Ochoa, was originally scheduled to attend today's press conference but was unable to leave Mexico as he was needed in the ongoing hurricane relief efforts there.
