Chapman picks up first Major League win

SEATTLE -- Lost amidst the Astros' ninth-inning comeback Monday and the revelation that pitcher Jarred Cosart had made his final start of the season was yet another first Major League win for an Astros pitcher. This one was by left-hander Kevin Chapman, who threw a scoreless inning.

Chapman is the seventh Astros pitcher to collect his first Major League win this year, joining Cosart, Brett Oberholtzer, Jose Cisnero, David Martinez, Josh Fields and Paul Clemens. Chapman earned his first save Aug. 18.

"I didn't come out of the game expecting anything," Chapman said. "We were down a run and everybody had great at-bats and we were able to get some runs."

Chapman entered Tuesday with a 2.19 ERA in 16 career appearances and began his career by not allowing an earned run in his first 13 outings (9 2/3 innings). He's allowed only one hit to a left-hander (1-for-18).

"It's just an ongoing process that never stops," Chapman said of his season. "I don't like to sit there and look at what I've done or haven't done. I like to come in every day and find a way to get better and stay as consistent as possible, and at the end of the year you can look back and see what you did right and see what you did wrong."
