HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston Astros have unveiled their schedule for the 2014 championship season, which includes an Opening Day matchup at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, April 1 vs. the New York Yankees.
This marks the first time in franchise history that the Astros will host the Yankees on Opening Day. Houston and New York have squared off in significant openers, as the Astros hosted the Yankees for the first exhibition games in the Astrodome (April 9, 1965) and at Minute Maid Park (March 30, 2000).
The opening homestand (April 1-7) will feature a total of three games against the Yankees and four games against the division-rival Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Houston will host their intrastate rivals, the Texas Rangers, for 10 games next season, with the first matchup being a three-game set from May 12-14. The Rangers will return in August for a pair of weekend series, a three-gamer from Aug. 8-10 and four-game set from Aug. 28-31.
On the weekend before the All-Star Break, July 11-13, the Astros will play three games at Minute Maid Park against the Boston Red Sox, who currently own the best record in the American League.
Houston will also host the Atlanta Braves, owners of the best record in the Major Leagues, for three games from June 24-26. The Braves are one of four National League teams that the Astros will host for Interleague Play. The Washington Nationals (April 29-30) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (June 11-12) will both be in Houston for quick two-game sets, while the Miami Marlins will return to Minute Maid Park for a three-game, weekend series from July 25-27.
The Astros home schedule is chock-full of games against AL Western Division rivals, including 10 games against the division-leading Oakland Athletics (April 24-27, July 28-30, Aug. 25-27), and nine games each against the LA Angels (April 4-7, June 3-5, Sept. 2-3) and the Seattle Mariners (May 2-4, June 30-July 2, Sept. 19-21).
