Houston Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow will be the first guest of this season’s Astroline call-in radio show, which returns on Thursday, November 29, and will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. from Buffalo Wild Wings (510 Gray St.) on Sports Talk 790 KBME. The show is open to the public.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Milo Hamilton returns as the host of Astroline and will be joined by Astros Social Media Director Kelly George, who will take fans questions via Twitter at twitter.com/astros either before or during the broadcast. Fans may also post questions prior to the broadcast on the Astros Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Astros. As always, fans will also have the option to call the show with questions at 713- 212-5790.
Astroline, which is presented by Budweiser, will be broadcast live each Thursday from 7-8:00 p.m. during the offseason.
Luhnow and his staff are currently preparing for the Annual Baseball Winter Meetings, which will be held in Nashville, TN, from December 3-6. Since being named Astros G.M. on December 7, 2011, during last year’s Winter Meetings, Luhnow has emphasized the Astros long-term plan to rebuild through a strong farm system.
In 2012, Luhnow’s first season as G.M., the Astros saw dramatic improvement in the performance of their minor league clubs, posting the fourth-best combined record in baseball at 439-394 (.527). Domestically, the Astros 417-347 (.546) record was tops in baseball. Six of the Astros eight minor league clubs finished at .500 or above with three advancing to postseason play. In 2011, the Astros minor league clubs ranked last (30th) with a 337-488 (.408) combined record with no clubs finishing at .500 or above.
Hamilton, who retired from the radio booth in 2012, began his Hall of Fame radio career as a disc jockey on the Armed Forces Radio Network during Thanksgiving week in 1945. The 2012 season was his 28th with the Astros and his 59th year broadcasting Major League Baseball. Although he retired from calling games, Hamilton will remain active with the Astros moving forward.
