Astros manager Bo Porter and pitcher Lucas Harrell to support local charities

HOUSTON - Houston Astros manager Bo Porter and pitcher Lucas Harrell will be out supporting local Houston charities on Saturday, November 17, 2012.

Porter will join VETSports at their charity softball tournament on November 17 to support wounded soldiers. The VETSports mission is to help wounded veterans overcome their injuries through adaptive sports and rehabilitation programs.  Porter will throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the 1:00 p.m. game between the VETSports team of wounded veterans and the Houston Police Department team. The Astros new mascot, Orbit will also be in attendance along with the Astros Shooting Stars.

The two-day event will include a men’s softball tournament (Nov. 17) and a co-ed softball tournament (Nov. 18), both of which will be held at the Houston Sportsplex located at 12631 South Main St., Houston, TX 77045.  Astros fans and military supporters can participate by registering a team for $250 at www.houstonsportsplex.com.  Spots are still available and the deadline to register is Wednesday, November 14 at 5:00 p.m.  Tournament proceeds benefit VETSports.

Also on November 17 at 8:30 a.m. at Minute Maid Park, Harrell will have a team (Team Harrell) taking part in the American Diabetes Association’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes event. Several years ago, Harrell’s father, Brad, was diagnosed with diabetes.  Since then, Lucas has educated himself on the disease and become an advocate for research. At the fundraising event, Harrell will walk with Orbit, the team’s new mascot, Astros front office staff and fans.

Additional fans can participate by walking as part of Harrell’s team and supporting his fundraising efforts by donating online at http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?team_id=539706&fr_id=8405&pg=team.
