Astros name Stearns Assistant General Manager

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have named David Stearns as their new assistant general manager this afternoon. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow.

“David was highly recommended by several industry experts,” said Luhnow. “His experience working at Major League Baseball as well as with three different clubs will be an asset for us.”

Stearns, 27, spent last season as the Cleveland Indians director of baseball operations. In that position, he assisted in all aspects of baseball operations with a focus on contract negotiations, salary analysis, team strategy and roster management.

Prior to joining Cleveland in December of 2011, Stearns spent three seasons (2008-11) working for Major League Baseball’s Office of the Commissioner, most recently serving as manager of Labor Relations. During his time working for the Commissioner, Stearns was a member of MLB’s negotiating committee on the recently completed Collective Bargaining Agreement, and assisted clubs through contract negotiations, the salary arbitration process and Rule 4 draft signings.

Stearns also has experience working in the baseball operations departments for the New York Mets, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Major League Baseball’s Arizona Fall League.

A 2007 graduate of Harvard University, Stearns was born and raised in New York City.
