HOUSTON -- Astros outfielder Justin Maxwell has been named by Wilson Sporting Goods as the team's top defensive player for 2012.
This marks the first season that Wilson has handed out Defensive Player of the Year Awards. The sporting goods company selected the best defensive player on each club, as well as the best defensive player in each league and the Majors' best defensive team. The league honors went to outfielders Michael Bourn (National League) and Mike Trout (American League). The Braves were chosen as the top defensive team.
Maxwell played right field, center and left for the Astros last season, appearing at all three spots in the same game several times, and made a handful of terrific catches all over the outfield. He was claimed by the Astros off waivers from the Yankees in April and hit .229 with 18 homers and 53 RBIs.
He made one of the catches of the year on Aug. 9, when he ran up Tal's Hill in straightaway center field at Minute Maid Park and made a diving catch to rob Washington's Jayson Werth of an extra-base hit.
The award winners were determined by the detailed statistical analysis of MLB Network's "shredder system" used by Clubhouse Confidential, plus input from MLB Network analysts.
