Villar sustained the injury between innings during the Hooks 12-2 victory last night at home vs. Frisco after punching a door. He ended up finishing the game, going 1x4 with a home run. However, x-rays following the game revealed the fracture. Villar will undergo surgery on his hand next week and will miss approximately six weeks.
“This is a big loss for us,” Luhnow said. “Jonathan was having an outstanding season and really showed that he is one of the top young shortstops in all of minor league baseball. The injury is unfortunate for Jonathan, but he has a very bright future ahead of him and we’re looking forward to him getting back on the field.”
The 21-year-old Villar, who entered this season ranked as the Astros No. 3 prospect by Baseball America, has 11 HR and 50 RBI in 86 games for the Hooks with a Texas League-best 39 stolen bases. His home run, RBI and SB totals are among the best of all shortstops in minor league baseball. Villar was named to the 2012 Texas League All-Star squad.
