HOUSTON -- The Astros Player Development Department named its Minor League Players of the Month for May on Friday.
Among the honorees were pitchers Fernando Abad, Runelvys Hernandez and Brad James; infielders Mark Saccomanno, Edwin Maysonet, Craig Corrado, Jhon Florentino and Chris Johnson; catcher Lou Santangelo and outfielders James Van Ostrand and Colin DeLome.
Hernandez posted a 4-0 record and a 1.98 ERA in six starts in May to earn Pitcher of the Month honors for Triple-A Round Rock. Saccomanno was named Offensive Player of the Month after hitting .325 with six home runs and 26 RBIs. Maysonet, a shortstop, received the Defensive Player of the Month after recording a .969 fielding percentage through 43 games at shortstop this season.
James was 2-1 with a 3.07 ERA for Double-A Corpus Christi. Third baseman Johnson batted .326 with seven doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs. Santangelo's .989 fielding percentage, 331 putouts and 28 assists in 409 innings behind the plate this season earned him the Defensive Player of the Month for the Hooks.
Class A Salem Avalanche Pitcher of the Month Bryan Hallberg owned a 1.38 ERA with 12 strikeouts in nine relief appearances last month. Van Ostrand hit .349 with nine doubles, four home runs, 28 RBIs and 18 runs scored. Van Ostrand leads the Carolina League in RBIs (86) and ranks fourth in hits (63). The Defensive Player of the Month was Florentino, who has 97 assists and 35 putouts in 51 games this season.
Abad finished May with a 3.00 ERA for Class A Lexington. Corrado batted .297 with nine runs scored, nine stolen bases and 11 RBIs. DeLome received Defensive Player of the Month honors and has a .967 fielding percentage with 87 putouts and two assists in 92 total chances in the outfield this season.
