Biggio inches closer to 3,000 hits

Biggio hits No. 2,993

ARLINGTON -- No. 7 has reached lucky number seven.

Craig Biggio singled off Kevin Millwood with no one out in the fifth inning, a line drive shot up the middle that brought his career total to 2,993. A moment later, Biggio scored on Hunter Pence's double to deep left-center, knotting the Astros' game with the Rangers at 2.

Lance Berkman's base hit to left gave the Astros a 3-2 lead, but that lead disappeared in the fifth when the Rangers posted eight runs.

Biggio needs seven hits to become the 27th player with 3,000 hits. He began the season 70 away from the milestone.

Biggio, who served as the designated hitter for Friday's opener at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, was hitless in his first two at-bats. He popped to short in his first plate appearance and grounded to the pitcher's mound in the second. He flied out to left in the sixth and flied to center to end the game.
