Quintero not your average catcher

Quintero's strong bat matches his swift glove

A good hitting catcher is usually a bonus to most lineups, but Humberto Quintero has shown to be more than that in his first two months in the Venezuela Winter League.

Quintero was one of the leading hitters in the league through November, batting .358 in his first five weeks with Aguilas del Zulia. Quintero has since come back to earth, but his numbers are more than respectable. Even though he's mired in a 4-for-27 funk in his last seven games, the 27-year-old backstop is still hitting .307. He also has four homers and 17 RBIs in 29 games.

The rest of the Houston Astros prospects are having strong campaigns in Winter League action as well. Here's the latest update.

Venezuela Winter League

LHP Carlos Hernandez -- Hernandez suffered a hard-luck loss on Dec. 6, yielding two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings, but he rebounded to even his record at 3-3 on Tuesday with a solid outing. He allowed one run on six hits in five innings to lower his ERA to 3.20.

LHP Enyelbert Soto -- Soto pitched for the first time in two weeks on Dec. 9 and yielded one run in 1 2/3 frames. He has given up 11 runs -- seven earned -- in 12 1/3 innings this season.

OF Jorge Cortes -- The 26-year-old Cortes pushed his average over the Mendoza line by going 4-for-14 in his last four games. He is batting .218 with 10 RBIs in 32 games.

RHP German Melendez -- Melendez hadn't pitched since Nov. 17, but he came back with his best performance on Dec. 9, tossing 4 2/3 scoreless frames to lower his ERA to 4.50.

OF Jason Lane -- The 30-year-old Lane is 3-for-17 in six games since joining the Leones del Caracas on Dec. 7.

RHP Paul Estrada -- Estrada made his debut for the Navegantes del Magallanes on Tuesday and gave up one run in one inning.

RHP Felipe Paulino Del Guidice -- The right-hander worked three scoreless frames on Dec. 5. He is 0-4 with a 5.32 ERA.

C Hector Gimenez -- The 5-foot-10, 180-pound backstop hasn't played since Nov. 21.

Mexican Pacific League

2B/SS Jesse Garcia -- Garcia joined Caneros de los Mochis in the middle of November after starting his Mexican Pacific League season with Aguilas de Mexicali. The move helped Garcia, since he's now hitting .264 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 23 games.

RHP Travis Driskill -- The right-hander evened his record at 2-2 by winning his last two starts in the Mexican Pacific League. Driskill allowed one run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings on Dec. 10 to lower his ERA to 3.42.
