How the Astros were built

The Houston Astros could serve as a model team for player development and scouting. Eleven players on the playoff roster were drafted by the Astros and came up through their organization, including All-Stars Craig Biggio, Roy Oswalt, Morgan Ensberg and Lance Berkman.

Much of that development can be credited to current general manager, Tim Purpura. Even though he has only served as the team's GM since Nov. 2004, he has been with the organization for 12 years; seven of those were spent overseeing player development. Among his biggest transactions, so far, have been re-signing seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens and three-time All-Star Lance Berkman this past offseason. Gerry Hunsicker served as general manager for 10 seasons before Purpura (1995-2004).
